Browsing For A Terrific Movie? Check Out These Good Movie Commentaries

By Corrine Collins

Nowadays is the best time in history to be a movie buff. It used to be that the only way you could see a terrific film was to visit the movie theater. Afterward video stores came on the scene but you had to go over there and many times the movies were out of stock. You also needed to fret about getting the show back to the store in a timely manner or you had to pay a late fee. Even now when you can get films in the mail, you still have to wait.

The Indian in the Cupboard - A youngster (Scardino) acquires an old chest as a birthday gift, and discovers that when he sets a toy Indian inside and turns the key, the Indian comes to life. Then he sees that the Indian is not a toy, but a real person. Troubles follow, particularly while his best pal summons to life a toy cowboy. Cast includes Hal Scardino, Lindsay Crouse, Richard Jenkins, Rishi Bhat, and Nestor Serrano. (96 minutes,'95)

Clue - Silly and insipid mystery based on the fashionable board game of the same name with all the familiar characters Mrs. Peacock, Colonel Mustard, Miss Red, et al. assembled for a murderous day in a Victorian mansion. Everyone tries very hard but there is nothing they can do to save this weak film. Cast includes Eileen Brennan, Tim Curry, Madeline Kahn, Christopher Lloyd, Michael McKean, Martin Ponder, and Howard Hesseman. (87 minutes,'85)

The Accidental Tourist - This motion picture tells the narrative of Macon Leary, who is listless after the death of his son. This is compounded more when his wife decides to leave him because he won't snap out of it. With a divorce awaiting he finds himself mixed up with a new woman, who is helping bring him back to life. Now his wife decides to have him back, and he is faced with more difficult questions. William Hurt, Kathleen Turner, Geena Davis, Amy Wright, and Bill Pullman star. (1988 Drama)

Mysterious Lady - An Austrian armed forces officer (Nagel) falls in love with Garbo, clueless that she's a Russian agent. Another contrived plot made serviceable by Garbo herself. Cast includes Greta Garbo, Conrad Nagel, Gustav von Seyffertitz, Albert Pollet, and Edward Connelly. (96 minutes,'28)

Above the Law - This is Steven Segal's breakout film. He plays a Chicago Cop who takes matters into his own hands. As the title implies, he is 'above the law'. He uses his large body and martial arts skills to inflict havoc on the bad guys. Stars include Steven Segal, Pam Grier, and Sharon Stone. (1988 Action)

Far and Away - A scrappy Irish occupant farmer hooks up, in doubtful style, with the equally spirited daughter of a affluent landowner, and together they travel to America to look for their final fortune in the'93 Oklahoma land rush. Outstanding platform for Tom and Nicole, who are both good-looking and involving; the trouble is a drastic absence of decent dialogue to fill the gaps between fight scenes. Cast includes Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, Thomas Gibson, Robert Prosky, Barbara Babcock, Cohn Meaney, and Rance Howard. (140 minutes,'92)
