The Importance of Table Position to Betting in Texas Hold'em Poker

Determining your opponents' playing styles is important, but gaining knowledge from your position is more so. Where you sit in relation to the dealer's button is called Table Position. The three basic table positions in poker are early (the Big Blind, Small Blind and Under the Gun), middle and late (including the Cutoff and the Button). The reason the dealer rotates the button after each hand is because table position is crucial to determining appropriate odds and bets.
When playing in late position -- which is the strongest position -- you get to see how other players react to their hands before the action comes to you. The Pokerism "Position is power" comes from this simple idea. The strength of position comes from the fact that the betting moves in a clockwise fashion.
Though the strength of your hole cards is important, how you use position in deciding your betting strategy is the most important tool in your poker skill set. Playing your starting hands the same no matter what position you are in is one of the gravest mistakes you can make. Though you may understand the strength of playing premium starting hands, incorrectly entering every pot without considering position is costly. The more information you possess, the more you increase your chances of winning the hand.
Your margin for error is less when you are sitting in early position. If you bet with a marginal hand pre-flop from early position, you can easily end up with a raise or even re-raise by players betting after you. This places you in the untenable position of immediately having to decide whether your hand is worth losing the extra chips (two or three small bets in limit, to an All-in in no-limit) just to see the flop. If you make the correct move and fold, you lose the chips you already put in the pot. Therefore, if you are in early position, you should restrict the hands you play to the top premium hands, because you have no way of knowing what the other players in the group are holding. Statistically at least one of the players behind you also has a premium starting hand. Though the big and small blinds are in early position, they have the advantage of acting last pre-flop.
If you are playing from middle position, you have players waiting for action and others that have already played. Though your pre-flop hand selection increases in middle position, in most situations you are still limited to playing strong opening hands. Since several players may be in the pot, you get better odds when playing weaker hands, but still have greater risk with the players behind.
If you do not consider position when playing a hand, you give an edge to players who do understand its importance. Poker Legend Doyle Brunson once remarked, "If I had position on a player, I wouldn't even need to look at my cards." Late position with a good hand has major advantages over the same hand in early position. Late position is especially important when playing marginal hands, such as suited-connectors or Aces with weak kickers. With the advantage of seeing your opponents' actions before you act, you can expand the range of your starting hands, often playing weaker hands from late position. If you do not consider position when playing a hand, you give an edge to players who do understand its importance.
Since the button is the strongest opening position, many players try to bluff or over-bet a weak hand from this position. Gaining knowledge of other players' styles helps to determine if they are overplaying a hand from the button or actually have a strong hand. It also provides a clue for how strongly you should protect your own blinds.
The type of game and the stakes involved can magnify the importance of position. In a low-stakes, limit game, with a table of loose players, position means less, since these players tend to play any two cards and draw to the end regardless. As the stakes get higher, position becomes more important. Position becomes even more important in no-limit play, as the threat of the All-in on each hand considerably raises the stakes more than in limit play.

This means that if our conscious mind has been regularly sending messages that are upbeat and positive to our sub-conscious mind, then that's what it will transfer back. But if our sub-conscious has been given loads of downbeat and defeatist messages, then that's equally what will be sent back.
It appears that achievers can manipulate the messages going through to their sub-conscious minds by deliberately programming their RAS, and selecting the exact messages the conscious mind transfers. For achieving goals this makes it an essential tool, because the sub-conscious mind can't distinguish between real or imaginary events.
In other words, as it believes what it's told, we need to create a very specific picture of our goal in our conscious mind. The RAS will then pass this on to our subconscious - which will then help us achieve the goal. It does this by bringing to our attention all the relevant information which otherwise might have remained as 'background noise'.
Napoleon Hill once wrote that we can attain any realistic goal if we keep that goal clearly in our mind, and stop allowing any negative thoughts about it. If we keep thinking that we can't achieve a goal, of course, our subconscious will help us not to achieve it.

Winning Texas Hold'em - The Power of Position
By Steve Schafer In Texas Hold'em, a player's table position is one of the most important elements of developing a winning game. A player's position in Hold'em is where he/she is seated relative to the player on the "button". Your position is vital when deciding how (or if) you should play a hand. Despite it's importance, position strategies are surprisingly underutilized by most novice Hold'em players.
There are four basic positions in Hold'em: Late position, middle position, early position and the blinds. The blinds are often lumped in with "early position", but since they are played a little differently, I gave them their own category. The following guidelines are just that - guidelines. There are many more factors to consider when playing Hold'em, but you should always default to the following rules. Here are the four positions and how they relate to your game play:
Early position in Texas Hold'em is the two seats just left of the blinds. Those players are the first to act pre-flop and most of the other players act after them post flop.The problem with EP is that if you play too loose here, you will find yourself stuck in a pot against a premium hand and you can easily loose a bunch of chips. Play really tight here. Play only premium hole cards (AA, KK, QQ, AK, AQ). Your goal here is to take the pot down early if you can. Raise with high pocket pairs (aces, kings and queens). Limp with you AK or AQ. If someone in late position raises after you limped your AK, go ahead and re-raise them. If they call you, you can bet into them after the flop and try to win the pot there. If they re-raise your re-raise, you are likely either dominated, or at best facing a coin-flip.
Next is middle position. These are the two positions just to the left of the two early position seats. You have a little more room to play here, but not much. Play it pretty much like early position, with the exception of maybe adding JJ or suited AJ to your starting hand arsenal. Be wary of early position limpers (unless you have already seen them limp in EP with junk) and you should fold to just about any raises from EP.
Late position in Hold'em is the button and player to his immediate right. Being in late position has a huge advantage over everyone else, in that they are allowed to see what everyone else does before they have to do anything. This basically gives them a license to steal. The button and the cut-off get to see the action and decide whether or not they want any part of it. They have the freedom to raise the blinds at will and see flops with all kinds of speculative hands, because they have the advantage of great position. Go ahead and raise the blinds with 88 or suited 89. Then just outplay any callers after the flop. Yes, you will be up against winning hands sometimes that people won't want to lay down, but you position gives you a better chance of spotting when that is and getting out of the hand before it gets ugly.
One of the most difficult positions to play in Texas Hold'em is the small and big blinds. You already have chips committed to the pot before it is your turn to act and everyone is trying to raise your blind. The good news is that you often have the correct pot odds to call raises, since you already have in the pot. The bad news is that unless you are really really good at playing from the blinds, your position will put you at too big a disadvantage to be able to outplay your opponent post flop. In less you can see a flop cheaply, or have premium hole cards, I would fold.
Texas Hold'em is really a waiting game. Be patient and play your position. If you follow these strategies you could be well on your way towards winning at Texas Hold'em. Now "Let's shuffle up and deal!

In 1987, Dudley Moore and Kirk Cameron portrayed father and son who switched lives in the movie "Like Father, Like Son". The father inadvertently sprinkles a mysterious Indian potion into his bloody Mary and immediately he and his son have traded identities. Cast also includes Margaret Colin, Catherine Hicks, Patrick O'Neal and Sean Astin.
Dudley Moore is a cardiovascular surgeon who is so preoccupied in his own life and his own vocation that he neglects to notice his son's tribulations with school and social activities. The identity crisis of course, leads to extraordinary complications at school and work but also helps both father and son see the outlook of the other.
A similar premise is the movie "Freaky Friday" from 2003. This one involves a 15-year old daughter and her mother who both don't try to empathize with the other. The mom wants more support for her forthcoming nuptials and the daughter wants more support for her musical dreams.
A fortune cookie on a Thursday evening brings about a Friday where they trade identities and learn to have consideration for the other. But they have to find a way to switch back before the marriage ceremony on Saturday. Starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan as mother and daughter and Mark Harmon as the mother's fianc.
Last but not least a recommendation for a dissimilar type of identity exchange, in "Mrs. Doubtfire" Robin Williams plays a free-spirited husband and dad who unenthusiastically gets divorced after fourteen years. Nevertheless, he cannot bear to be away from his kids so he pretends to be a British housekeeper and his ex-wife employs him as a nanny.
Sally Fields is the ex-wife, with Pierce Brosnan as her new boyfriend. Robin Williams plays the dad and Mrs. Doubtfire with Lisa Jakob, Matthew Lawrence and Mara Wilson as the children. "Mrs. Doubtfire" is a movie that everybody can enjoy from the year 1993.

Amistad: This film is based on the true story of an unsuccessful mutiny aboard a slave ship in 1839 bound for the US.
